Gingham Shirt / Leopard Clutch / Sweater / Quilted Vest / Trench Coat / Blanket Scarf / Plaid Shirt / Jeans / Hunter Boots / Lip Gloss / Faux Fur Vest / Striped Shirt / Bean Boots
My friend Bailey emailed me a few weeks ago to ask for some help on her fall wardrobe. She said that she wanted a list of fall basics that she could mix with the current pieces in her closet so that she would have a well-rounded selection. I could have put quite a few things on this list but I spent some time whittling it down and thought I’d share the final list here as well!
Let’s start with the shirts. Obviously plaid is number one. The one in the collage above is a great red option but I’ve also had my eye on this white and blue plaid shirt. Similar to plaid, I always keep a gingham shirt in my fall arsenal (see how I last wore one here). Moving away from button downs, a classic navy and white striped shirt is great for pairing with a plaid shirt or blanket scarf.
As far as the bottom half goes, a pair of lightly distressed jeans goes with pretty much anything. Not pictured above, this year I added (faux) leather leggings to my list for the first time. They’re so chic yet comfortable. I pair both jeans and leggings with brown leather boots. I usually splurge on a nice pair every few years because I end up wearing them so often. This year I went with these riding boots but another great option that’s more affordable is this pair.
Of course “when there’s weather”, I always keep two options on hand: Hunter rain boots for rainy days and LL Bean bean boots for snowy and icy situations.
Top things off with a navy quilted vest for weekend errands, a classic trench for work, and a faux fur vest for pretty much any occasion. Add a blanket scarf and you’ll look like you’re ready for a day in the apple orchard!

I can’t even pick a favorite here. You really put together the best clothing staples lists! Everything really is a staple!

I agree with these picks, they are perfect for mixing and matching! I especially love faux leather leggings in the fall, they’re a new basic in my opinion!
