Kate Spade Gingham One-Piece c/o (Also love the bikini version) / Old Hat (Similar here)
I feel like my swimsuit game has been strong this summer, so while we still have some time left before it’s all blanket scarves and sweaters, I wanted to share my personal top picks for the best summer swimsuits. As you can tell by the collage below, I’m all about red, white, navy, gingham, stripes, and solids. I rarely stray from those in my swimsuit collection.
It’s funny because I don’t wear red that often but I have two red bathing suits that I wear on repeat. I have last year’s version of this suit that is crazy crazy flattering. It’s definitely pricey but worth it in my opinion because it really sucks you in. This classic scoop back also looks great on (I have it in black) but is on sale for $23 so no brainer there! If you’re into red one pieces this ruffle neck scoop back is an absolute dream. If I didn’t already have two, I’d be all over it.
As far as flattering suits go, I got this Kate Spade gingham one piece for an Instagram collaboration and love it. It’s super flattering on the stomach and has underwire so is great for a post-partum chestal area because it gives lots of extra support. It comes in a two piece version too.
I don’t own any striped and solid suits but people swear by them and I’ve had my eye on this classic striped one all summer long. I feel like I can’t justify one more this year but I just adore it!
As far as brands go, Victoria’s Secret used to make my favorite bathing suits. I’m not a fan of their bras or undies but their swim game was amazing because they sold bikini tops by your bra size and nothing has ever fit me better. IMO, there’s a void in the market now but maybe I’m missing something. J.Crew is obviously also a favorite for swimwear. Their suits are classic and they often have underwire options like this cute gingham bikini. The Kate Spade suits can be pricey but they fit really well and have fun patterns that make me happy.

I like to buy mine at L.L. Bean and Lands’ End. Good quality, good prices (especially with promo codes) and covers everything I want covered.
Victoria’s Secret has simply lost their way. Overall downhill quality, not such nice/classy designs, and skimping on material. Also the stores aren’t as nice as they once were. (I don’t know if you are allowed to mention other blogs on here but GoRetro had a good piece on this a few years ago.)
Agreed about VS which is so sad bc they made the best most supporting swimsuits ever and I miss them! I didn’t even know LL Bean and Lands’ End made swimwear but I love both companies so I’m going to check those out.
I love the gingham! It makes me want to hop on a sailboat and eat a lobster roll (basically the lerfect summer day!)
Isn’t it great that this season one pieces just keep getting cuter?

I feel the same way slash want to do that everyday 🙂 And yes the one pieces are my favorite this year!
All of your one piece picks have a similar style in the back; very low scoop back or low back. Can you post some with a little more back coverage? Also, many swimsuits these days have spf in them. Can you highlight some of those? This post would have been way better if you included more varied silhouettes. Your swimsuit game may be “strong” but like many of your posts I find that it’s written just for you and what you wear, not to serve your readers with a variety of choices.
That’s a good point and something I need to be more cognizant of! Thank you for the feedback.
For SPF suits, Mott50 is my favorite. Lots of silhouettes and colors and patterns. For more back coverage, the Kate Spade one I posted is super supportive but there are a lot of good ones on the site everythingbutwater.com. They cost a bit more but they carry quality brands and have a variety for every body type.
Great, thanks!
Wow. Just wow.
I come here to see what Julia likes to wear because it is a blog about her life and I think she is lovely. I have very little in common with Julia, I’m childless and a good 10-15 years older too. The draw is that I love to see what someone else is doing and to get ideas. I would never dream of telling her how to post on her site. If you know what you’re looking for, why not just do your own search instead of critiquing her choices?
The void in the market is for anyone who is bigger than a C cup size. I’m not overweight but I’m a DD who has nursed 3 children. Almost nothing fits me. I wear 1 piece suits and Land’s End actually has a few suits that fit. Bathing suit shopping for bigger chested women is a nightmare.
That’s so frustrating! The VS suits were so perfect because you could do a top for DD and then a smaller bottom if you needed to. I haven’t found any companies doing something similar now. Lots of people are saying Lands’ End though so good to know.
I am loving that sweet suit on you! You look So Stunning!!!
Also, thanks so much for your honest and personal posts- your warm sharing has really helped me navigate and feel through some tough times. It ain’t easy being a woman! But you remind me that it takes a lot of courage, grace, and hope. And you wear it so well! 😉
All the best to you Julia!
Thanks Claire! That really means a lot, you have no idea. xx
That is such a cute swimsuit.
