TV Shows To Binge This Summer

TV Shows to Binge Watch This Summer

TV watching has changed since having a baby, that’s for sure. Gone are the days of binge-watching anything besides the baby monitor. Anel and I usually watching one episode of something each night and then we’re spent.

That said, in the winter months, we spent many of her weekend naps trying to sneak in two eps of our favorite shows. Here are the binge-worthy ones that I’ve been loving over the last year… Even if I can’t binge them anymore!

Image above is via Homey Oh My

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu): I couldn’t be more hooked on one show if I tried. Season one ended where the book originally ended so I wasn’t sure if this season would live up to the first but boy has it done that and more. It’s so terrifying but well done, and I’m dying to know if Offred will escape or not in the end. What do you think?

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime): To offset the horrific scenes in The Handmaid’s Tale, I like to watch Mrs. Maisel the night after. It’s so positive and happy and just fun to watch. There aren’t a lot of shows that I’m hooked on that aren’t intense or dramatic, but this one does the job. Plus Rachel Brosnahan is hilarious, charismatic, and beautiful.

Queer Eye (Netflix): Speaking of positivity, the remake of Queer Eye is pure love. I cried in all eight episodes as the Fab Five gave eight straight men life makeovers and newfound confidence. I’m also madly in love with Antoni… Why can’t he just be straight, single, and in love with me back!?

Billions (Showtime): When Damien Lewis left Homeland, I was devastated (I’m perhaps too invested in that show) so when he popped up on Billions, I had my popcorn ready to go for the pilot. Anel and I have been watching it ever since. This season has been my least favorite so far but still can’t quit it. There’s something about a glimpse into the life of the uber-rich that is so fascinating to me.

The Affair (Showtime): The first season of The Affair was one of my favorite pilot seasons of any show ever. I was so sucked into it that it got a little weird… I think I binged most of it in a matter of days. You’ve all been there, you know what I mean! Nothing has compared to the first season but it’s back for it’s fourth right now and I feel quite invested in the characters and story lines. I’m also mildly obsessed with Dominic West, nbd.

Patrick Melrose (Showtime): We haven’t actually started this but we keep seeing previews when we watch Billions so it’s next on the list. It looks so good and the role is seemingly made for Benedict Cumberbatch. Has anyone watched it?

Grace & Frankie (Netflix): There are no new episodes right now but I urge you to watch this show if you’re in need of a pick me up or a good laugh. The premise is that two business partners fall in love with each other, leaving their wives in the dust. The wives, played by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, end up becoming besties and even starting a business together.

Ozark (Netflix):I just read that season two of Ozark is confirmed and potentially coming back this summer. Any further insight into this would be greatly appreciated! Anel and I binge-watched season one last fall and loved the spooky scenery and Jason Bateman’s creepy character. The whole thing was eerily beautiful. Fun fact, when I was on The TODAY Show, I had my make up done next to Jason Bateman and we smiled at each other. Basically best friends, right?

Homeland (Showtime): The latest season just ended and the next is supposedly the last. Boo! Homeland has been one of my top shows since it first started and there was only one season (ahem, five) that really disappointed. It always feels very current politically and definitely keeps me on my toes! I usually can’t watch it before bed because I get way to riled up and anxious.

The Wire (HBO): Anel and I started The Wire last summer after we realized that neither of us had watched it despite my dad trying to convince us that it was the best show on television ever. We watched it from beginning to end and although a lot of the topics felt dated, it was engrossing and amazing. I finally understand why people loved it so much!

What have you watched lately that I need to add to my list?

Glad you went with TV! Did you read Sweetbitter? It just finished season 1. My only complaint is that it’s too short a season and episodes are only 30 minutes. Don’t get me wrong, I like a 30 minute show every now and then. But this just left me wanting more.

Lots of my shows on your list! New season of Queer Eye is released Friday and I can’t waaaait! I also watch a lot of bad Bravo reality TV as my mindless escape (motherhood is a lot of work :). I’ve exhausted these for a while, but I’m still obsessed with Veep and Great British Bake Off.

Currently re-watching “Jane the Virgin” on Netflix and it’s VERY binge-able. Sort of dramatic at times, but the relationship between the three leading ladies (Jane, her mother, and her grandmother) is what I love the most about the show.

Also just binged most of season one of “Glow,” which was good! Gotta plug “The OA” as well–it came out in 2016, but remains one of my favorites and I’m anxious for season 2! “Orphan Black” is another favorite–all five seasons are on Amazon. I gave up on “Homeland” after season 3, but may have to pick it back up!

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is the only show that I will stay up until midnight for–sort of irrational, but I can’t help myself but watch the episode right when it airs! Today’s episode was SO GOOD.

Lastly, Tony Shalhoub is a GEM on Mrs. Maisel! One of my favorite quotes is from him–“Your pedestrian safety is no importance to me anymore.” Such an amazing show all around!

My husband and I are currently watching The Bates Motel, and that’s a good creepy, thriller type of show if you’re into that kind of show! I really want to watch The Handmaid’s tale but I don’t currently have Hulu, it might be worth though picking it up for a few months to binge it!

I started Patrick Melrose…it’s well done but really dark. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts if you decide to watch it. I couldn’t go past the first episode…by no means do I stick with light and fluffy shows, but PM was just too hard for me to watch.

Omg – you need to watch Schitt’s Creek on Netflix. HILARIOUS. Each episode is only 20ish minutes long, so it’s not a huge commitment.

Have you watched Orphan Black? It was on BBC America for several seasons and is one of my favorites! It was because of OB that I watched Killing Eve, and it was also fantastic. Really complicated female characters that you just can’t stop thinking about. I read the Patrick Melrose books, but I don’t get Showtime, so I can’t wait until it streams somewhere else. And IMHO, The Wire is probably the best show that ever existed. I just watched it the past few years, and I was actually amazed at how relevant it still is. Not to mention how often the cast shows up in so many other great shows.

The Crown and Stranger Things on Netflix!! They are very different shows but both have amazing stories and characters. I think season 3 will be coming out this year for each of them!
I also have heard Queer Eye is super happy, I definitely will start that next!!

Love all of your pics and have watched most of them. The only one I actually disliked was Patrick Melrose (and I love Benedict Cumberbatch). His character is quite pathetic and the first episode left me feeling depresses…ugh! Couldn’t watch beyond episode 1.
The rest of your suggestions are worth the binge!
