How to Dress for Weddings

Wedding season is definitely upon us! I have two bachelorette parties and a wedding this month alone so it’s been on my mind a lot. Brides get a lot of help dressing for their big day but I thought it would be fun to make a dress guide the guests as well. There are so many rules around weddings but the biggest rule in dressing for one is to not wear white. Never. Ever. It’s ok if it’s in a pattern or part of a striped dress but if the dress is more than 50% white, don’t even give it a second glance. That should go without saying but you would be shocked at how many people disregard this rule. So disrespectful to the bride!

Let’s start with casual weddings. These are the easiest to dress for because the spectrum for what you can wear is so huge! You can never be overdressed so no need to worry about that. On the other end of that, don’t show up in shorts and a tee. A light cotten dress with statement jewelry is as casual as I would go. I love wearing wedges to weddings because they keep your feet comfy all night long. Next, let’s review for formal weddings.

There is a fine line between formal and black tie weddings. Formal weddings give you a little bit of leeway. You don’t have to wear a gown but a pulled together cocktail dress and heels are definitely a must. I love statement dresses with a top knot for something different.

I have the hardest time with black tie weddings, but I rarely wear a long gown. Mainly because I own a total of zero. Per the photo above, I wore a silk dress and draped my neck in pearls for the last black tie wedding I went to.

On a totally unrelated note, a friend of a friend has a Kickstarter campaign to make LiveFast magazine into a book. I rarely share these kinds of things but this one is pretty great! Even $1 helps.
