I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe. I even made one for summer. But realistically, I’ve realized that a capsule wardrobe doesn’t really work for me. I like classic pieces that come in a capsule wardrobe, but I also like having bold colors and patterns in my closet. And I end up wearing them year after year like many people would wear more neutral clothing or capsule pieces.
What works for me each season is having a few classic pieces like the perfect black jeans for fall, a fun pair of booties, and a plaid blazer (Similar for $99). And then I mix in fun items that make me smile when I see them in my closet. Like a leopard print sweater dress and a teddy coat (Similar for $115).
I believe that getting dressed should make you feel great, and what makes me feel great is having fun with my wardrobe. But then there’s the sustainability factor, something I’ve been thinking about a lot more lately. Do I only shop at sustainable brands? No. Do I try to when possible? Yes! But another way to be sustainable in your shopping is to buy pieces that you’ll wear for a long time, things that you won’t get sick of and get rid of in a season.
When I created my wish list for this season, I kept that in mind. The first item I put on my list are these Madewell black jeans. I have them in white (seen here) and my sister and two friends bought them in black for fall. They both said they run big so size down a full size. I just ordered mine so stay tuned for a full review, but they look great on everyone else so far and I always love Madewell jeans. I know that I’ll be wearing these for years to come.
The second thing I added was an oversized plaid blazer, something I’ve wanted since last fall. Everlane makes this one that is gorgeous, but if it’s out of your price range, I also found this one for half the price. Even though I already have a smaller Cuyana tote, I added this zippered tote to my list as I find myself carrying my laptop around more and more. Given it price and the fact that I don’t really need it, it will probably go on my Christmas list.

I love that leopard dress and that headband. I will be adding them to my fall wishlist too.
I may be showing my age, but I don’t know what a capsule collection is!! In any case, I tend to reach for the same things over and over again and almost always pay a bit more money for something well made and timeless
You basically have the idea with that strategy!
I like to find updated staples like the black jeans, but I like a good pop mixed in. So, I tend to splurge on the classics and go cheaper on the trendy pop that might not be built to last.
Julia,
Please post the company’s name, etc., for succulent plant.
Would like to purchase one.
Best,
Antoinette
Are you referring to the plant from my Instagram stories last night? If so, it was made by a local vendor called Winston Flowers. They’re wonderful! If you meant something else, let me know.
Those fun booties from J. Crew are everything!!! And, I am having major heart eyes for that leopard sweater dress! It would look so cute with a blazer, and some OTK boots! I am making my fall wishlist now!! Love this, Julia! Happy fall 🙂
