Well hello there! I hope you all had an amazing long weekend and feel refreshed and renewed. If you overindulged a little, try my post travel detox which I’ll be doing all week too! Our trip to Bermuda was wonderful, but now that we’re home, I’m in full holiday mode.
By the end of today, I’m on track to finish almost all of my holiday shopping for family which is a personal record. The Black Friday sales were unreal and many of them are still going strong (or even stronger) today! You can see updates from my favorite sales below.
I also pulled out all of my plaid clothing yesterday and that really put me into the holiday spirit. There’s nothing like a good tartan shirt or plaid party dress that really puts the jingle in my bells, you know? Since it’s the season of plaid, I thought I’d share 20 ways to wear plaid and where you could wear each of the outfits pictured here. In my book, it’s the more plaid the merrier!
Pictured above: Blazer / Boots
This was a little BTS shot from our holiday card photo shoot. I love these plaid pants for a casual holiday cocktail hour. Pair them with a cashmere sweater and sparkly earrings to dress them up. PS Amalia’s Dress is on major sale!
Wear this tartan tunic over leather leggings for an office holiday party or girls night out!
It’s a little hard to see but I’m wearing a blackwatch dress behind the giant gifts (similar here) and it’s a great one to wear for church on Christmas or a family gathering. It’s conservative when worn with tights, but still festive.
Man I wish I still had this blanket scarf/cape situation! It’s was so cozy to throw on anytime. I used to bring it to the office where I worked and would put it over my shoulders if I got cold there.
Where haven’t I worn this classic shirt? You’ll see it a few times in these photos for a reason. Pair it with a mini skirt, tights, and boots for drinks. PS Tablecloth is old Ralph Lauren that I found at Home Goods last Christmas.
I remember wearing this outfit in the city a few years ago to a blogger event. I love a mini skirt with a plaid flannel tucked in.
Swap the heels for flats and you have a perfect casual work outfit or something to wear for holiday shopping! I love this plaid cuff sweater oh so much.
I wore this black watch dress to get our tree last year. I can’t believe how tiny Miss A looks! It’s also a great work outfit.
This was from our holiday card photo shoot in Napa in 2015. I was literally in the middle of a miscarriage and crying on and off all day. It used to be hard to look at this photo but now I’m so grateful for everything that brought me to Amalia. In other news, wear this plaid skirt/sweater combo to a family gathering.
Pair a tartan top with faux fur, a buffalo check clutch, and jeans for book club!
This ruffle plaid shirt, jeans combo can take you from apple picking to a kids birthday party. It’s a great pulled together mama on duty look.
Apparently I have too many plaid skirts… JK there will never be enough! I remember wearing this exact outfit last year to a holiday dinner party hosted by friends. I got so many compliments on it.
TBH, looking back on this plaid vest situation, I’m not so sure it was the best choice lol. But if you’re into it, it’s great to pop on for a festive trip to the grocery store for egg nog and candy canes.
Another plaid skirt (on sale)? Oh man, Julia. This is getting out of control. But you drink that cocktail, hunny!
If I were a shoe, I would be this. They are old from Talbots but I wish so badly that they still made them! Pair plaid flats with pretty much anything this season. Here is a similar pair for 40% off.
Pattern-mixing 101: Plaid and stripes are always a good idea. Rock this at daycare pick up.
Are blanket scarves still cool? I really wish they were because man were they cozy. This was my go-to weekend/errand-running look two winters ago.
One last plaid skirt for our 2016 Christmas card photo! I was newly pregnant with Amalia here.
Give me all the plaid! I’m definitely still rocking my blanket scarves. I can’t bring myself to part with them and they take up too much space to store and not wear! Have you seen the JCrew tartan plaid in person this year? Online this year’s seems to be a little less saturated than the one you wear. I have the JCrew factory one from a few years ago and it’s definitely a more faded color and I find it a little less festive and harder to dress up.
YAS girl so happy to hear you say this. I might have to do a post on this again this year. And I just ordered some of the new J.Crew tartan so will let you know once I see it in person!
Great! Can’t wait to see you style more plaid.
Thank you so much for this! You have no idea how much tartan I bought during this J. Crew sale….a lot! ahah!!

I’m now the proud owner of all of their new arrivals hahaha
Ummm what?!? Blanket scarves are out?! Please oh please say it isn’t so! Haha
Is the Stewart tartan button down from J.Crew more navy or black? Your photos look a little different than the site. Wondering if it would look. Best with navy or black velvet leggings.
Mine is definitely black but it’s from last year. I haven’t seen the one from this year in person but if I do, I’ll let you know!
Such a wonderful ways to wear a plaid and i think women look so classy in nice plaid / black fur leather jacket / coats with boots and anything else. Like your taste.
