Life Lately: Volume 6

Charleston Charm

Well today is the day, folks. A day I’ve been dreading since November 8th. Donald Trump officially becomes our 45th president. I’m torn about watching the inauguration today. While I would normally think it’s important to watch under any circumstance, I feel like it will cause me more anxiety than anything else, so the jury’s still out on that. I’m trying to focus on being positive and hopeful for the next four years. And apparently the Dalai Lama agrees!

Compared to the feelings I had in 2008, it couldn’t be more different. I was working at my first job out of college (as a Sales Assistant at Condé Nast), and they set up a big screen in the conference room so everyone could watch Obama get sworn in. The entire room cried tears of hope and happiness. It’s a memory that I’ll never forget.

In other news, I’m planning a trip to Charleston with Victoria and Grace in March (hence the gorgeous pic above), and we need your recommendations! Let me know of any great restaurants or must-do activities. I already got a lot of great ones on Instagram but keep them coming. We’re going to go through them all and make an itinerary with your help.

The world belongs to humanity. The Dalai Lama spoke up about the incoming administration with some wise words, as always. Read the article.

How to be a successful blogger. My friend Jess relaunched her site this week (how gorgeous!?) and also wrote one of my favorite posts from her ever, on how to be successful at blogging. Such an amazing resource! Read the post.

Cold shoulders. I picked up this adorable striped off-shoulder top for my trip to LA next week. If I’m going for a trendy look, you better believe it’s going to have classic stripes! Shop it here.

House goals. Abby Capalbo is one of my favorite accounts to follow on Instagram, so I was pretty stoked to see Glitter Guide feature her home tour this week. I love her laid back, coastal style. Check it out.

Recipe of the week. If you follow me on Snapchat, you saw me making this incredible slow-cooker beef ragu. I replaced the Papardelle with spiralized sweet potato for a healthier version. Anel’s reaction was that it was so good I should go on Top Chef, ha! Oh and by the way, it couldn’t be any easier to make. Get the recipe.

Speaking of stripes. How cute will this dress be for spring and summer? Shop it here.

A Dog’s Purpose. When we saw La La Land last weekend (you must if you haven’t yet), they played a preview for A Dog’s Purpose and I lost it, like full-on tears in the theater… at a preview! I think anyone who has a dog will probably cry when they see it too. I can’t wait to see the whole movie soon. Watch the preview. UPDATE: Based on the comments below, I watched some videos and read a bunch of articles. I’m so sad to say that it looks like animal cruelty was happening on set and I will now, for sure, be skipping this movie. You can see more of the heartbreaking footage here.

Winter chic. Kat’s winter outfits make me want to up my cold-weather-look game, if you know what I mean! So stunning… Read the post.

All of the colors. Anel and I are planning a warm-weather trip in Februray, and I’m so excited to pick up a few pieces from the new Persifor collection. I especially love this wrap dress. Gorgeous! Shop new arrivals.

Weekly playlist. Spotify did it again with New Music Friday, an eclectic and mostly upbeat mix. Listen here.

Only you can decide if you are going to watch the inauguration but you are correct to be worried about our collective future. I implore you to get active and find your voice beyond just the ballot box on election day. Once thing you can do it get educated and get vocal – call you Senator/Congressman. Many of the selections the incoming administration have made are downright terrifying.
    1) Secretary of the EPA – does not believe in the EPA and as AG of Oklahoma has repeatedly sued the EPA, currently has 8 lawsuits against the EPA but does not see that as a conflict of interest. Climate Change Skeptic.
    2) Secretary of Health and Human Services – on the record that insurance plans should not cover the cost of birth control, favor of defunding Planned Parenthood, favor or repealing row v. wade, details are not available he is on the record as wanting to repeal the ACA and replacing it with a free market where as individuals you get a tax credit and then go out and buy your insurance – but of course the tax credit will not cover the cost of the insurance
    3) Secretary of Education – no understand of the Individuals with Disabilities Act which requires public schools to provide free and appropriate education to all students – believes its a state issue (not federal – seriously you cant make this stuff up ), will support the removal of the gun-free zones around schools,
    4) Secretary of the Treasury – predatory lending practices
    5) Attorney General – racist
    6) Secretary of the Interior – believed in drilling on public lands and climate change is not proven science
    7) Secretary of Energy – did not know what the job actually entailed when he ran for president stated he wanted to dismantle this department stated it was wasteful money – department runs our Nuclear Arsenal – also was a contestant on dancing with the stars – just saying
    8) Secretary of Labor – does not believe in Minimum Wage laws – does not believe in paid sick leave laws

Hi! I was really excited to see “A Dog’s Purpose” as well, but there has been a call to boycott that movie due to the treatment of the animals on the film. There is video footage on TMZ.

yes…that video of the terrified German Shepherd being forced into the water broke my heart. A dog’s purpose is not to be tortured in order to entertain us. I won’t be seeing that movie. Thanks for mentioning it! I am glad to see that it is getting a lot of coverage and people are speaking out about it.

On a lighter note, Charleston is amazing. I love 5Church for dinner, Husk for dinner, Poogan’s Porch for lunch, and Canon Green for brunch!

I hear you Julia. Hard reality to accept today. I didn’t watch any of the inauguration because it’s just too upsetting. I remember Obama’s inauguration like it was yesterday. I had just been hired at my first job to of college, it was incredibly emotional and such a hopeful time. We’ve been lucky for the past 8 years. In other news, thanks for sharing my new site and my post on blogging. Miss you! xx

I just want to say I really admire that you’re not afraid to be a little bit political at times. I totally understand the business reasons bloggers (and others!) have for keeping their thoughts to themselves, but I’m so glad you feel free to be your authentic self– your blog is better for it!

First timer, thank you for sharing! I wonder if at all possible to tell me the paint colors on the top photo? Very top of page? The creamy color home with the soft colored shutters and wood door? I would be extremely grateful as this is exactly what I’m trying to do but have failed for over a year to recreate that look!

    Glad I found you!

Geez, does everything have to have a political slant! I come to pinterest for wonderful ideas and love of decor, not to speak or have to read about a duly elected President, I watched the inauguration, and do so every time a new President is elected.

Why not just stick to decor topics and leave your political opinions out.
