I’m launching another one of my 2019 blog series today with January’s Book Club! Reading is a huge part of my life, and I’ve been wanting to start an online book club for over a year now. I read every single night before bed, even if it’s for five minutes. I love how books can take me out of my own head and into a completely different world for a few minutes every day.
I also love to connect with other people to discuss books we’ve read. And this is such a perfect place to do that on a bigger scale!
Reading is important to everyone in my family. My mom is a speed reader and goes through 4+ books a week (not exaggerating). She even has a book blog called Delightful Reads! Her love of reading was passed down to me and I passed it to my daughter who prefers books over toys every day of the week. I fantasize that one day all three of us can have a book club where we drink wine, talk books, and gossip about the rest of our family.
My favorite kinds of books are thrillers, WWII themed novels, historical fiction in general, and stories with strong female leads. This month’s pick, The Other Woman, is none of those things, but I picked it because I saw it in Reese’s Book Club, and I’ve loved every other book she’s chosen so far. It also got a ton of buzz and people seemed to love it so I jumped right on that.
That said, I’m halfway into it and (eek!) I don’t love it. Great start on the book clubs, Julia, am I right? It is definitely a page-turner though, and I need to know what happens so I’m into it for those reasons. I also think it’s good to discuss books that aren’t perfect because we can all think about what makes us consider a book good or bad. BTW I’m not saying that this book is bad, it’s not! It’s just not my favorite book I’ve read lately.
Despite that fact, I’m hoping that you guys join me in this book club and read it anyway (it’s a really quick read!) so that we can all discuss it back here on February 7th when I’ll also announce February’s book which is going to be really really good.
Will you be joining me this month?
Well you sold me
I haven’t been able to get through 50 pages of a book in over a year, so while I like the idea of a book club, I’m not convinced this baby is going to get me over my 50 page hump.
Yes! This made my day!
Yes!! Starting this one tonight!!
I just ordered it
But it will took me a while to read it because it’s in English and harder for me! ( I am French)
That’s ok because it’s not too long! I think you’ll finish in time 🙂
I am more concerned about the vocabulary^^ I hope it will not be to difficult, but I can’t wait to talk about it with everyone! I always wanted to be part of a book club!!
So excited, love talking books! I read this one a few months back and it’s a slow start, but then ending is good! Enjoy! Will you be doing a Facebook group or a Goodreads group? Would love a platform for discussion!
Oooh good to know! I think I’m going to start a Facebook group so stay tuned for that!
I just finished this one and WOAH the ending was not what I expected. I think you’ll like how it turns out! 🙂 but I agree – a slow start.
Oh good, now I’m excited! I think I may have guessed it but could be wrong 🙂
I’m in!! I finished it and know EXACTLY what you mean! I was halfway through when I was like why am I still reading this book (parts of it could be worded better) but the overall story had been invested so I had to finish it. Can’t wait until you finish we need to discuss the ending!!!!!
Had me invested, sorry! I should use proper English in a book club
Just finished and ended up really liking it as a fun escape — not a book to take too seriously!
That’s really how you have to look at it, I feel same way!
I just checked and it is ready for me to pick up from the library! Can’t wait to read this weekend!
I’m in! I just finished Educated (which was so intense), so this is s nice change. I started it yesterday. Thanks for launching this.
Not sure if you’ve read it but ‘Secrets of a charmed life’ was a good WWII book.
Also, love your fantasy of your future book club with your Mom and daughter- esp the part where you gossip about your family. I thought that was just as pastime in my family – lol!
How do we sign up?
I am in! Love book clubs. Will you have a Facebook page? I am reading that book as well… Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
I just saw your question on stories. I don’t have FB. Do you have Goodreads? You can do bookclubs on there… although not sure how that works.
Love love love the idea of a bookclub by the Way!
Just finished this book!!! Soooo good!
Yes! I would love to join!
Julia, I also this book suggestion from Reese but it sounded to similar the another book I read. I’m just starting A Perfect Mother, the reviews are great-keep us posted on your next book. Looking forward to joining Book Club together, Cristina
Yes! I was about to return this to the library (due date was looming), but when I saw you were going to start your book club with this, I ended up reading it in 2 days. Can’t wait to discuss.
I am in! I read SO MUCH, so am always looking for direction in what to read next. I have a stack of library impulses next to my bed, but somehow only one made it on my weekend trip with me…a good excuse for the local bookstore! 🙂
How do we join? I always love your book choices!! This is a great idea!!! I don’t have Facebook though so I’m hoping there is another venue.
How do we sign up for the bookclub?
This is awesome! I’m a digital nomad so I’d love to join a virtual book club. Great idea Julia!!
If you like historical fiction, try “The Kennedy Debutante.” It’s a great book. And I LOVED “The Other Woman” too!!
Just finished The Last Mrs. Parrish per your recommendation so I’m excited for this series! Love to see what you’re reading 🙂
I am in. Currently reading my 2nd book that you have recommended. Once I finish that, I will start this one!
Will join if I can get it from the library in time! When will you be discussing?
This is so great! I also love WWII fiction, historical fiction, and just realized last fall (after reading The Couple Next Door) that I love thrillers, too! This was a shock since I’m a librarian and you’d think I know my reading tastes a bit better 😉 I’ve learned in my years of leading book discussions at the library that often the books that aren’t as good as you expect make for the BEST discussions. I’ll be sure to follow along this year!
